Sports in America take a variety of forms: organized competitive games, to which huge crowds come to cheer their favourite team to victory; athletic games played for recreation anywhere where is enough space. Most sports are seasonal, so that what is happening in sports depends upon the time of year. Some sports are called spectators sports, as the number of spectators greatly exceeds the number actually playing. Other sports are called participant sports, drawing a crowd of onlookers only on special occasion, such as tournaments. Some sports are commercial and professional, with players being paid for their participation and with audiences paying admission to watch.
Baseball is the most popular sport in the United States. It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the autumn. While no other game is exactly like baseball, perhaps the one nearest to it is the English game of cricket. Baseball heroes are talked about and remembered as perhaps in no other sport.
Football is the most popular sport in the autumn. The game originated as a college sport more than one hundred years ago. It is still played by almost every college and university in the country, and the football stadiums of the largest universities seat as many as eighty thousand people. There professional football teams in all major cities of the United States. The players are almost always former college football players. While college football games are usually played on Saturday afternoons, professional football games are customary played on Sunday afternoon or evening.
Basketball is the winter sport in American schools and colleges. It is more popular in the United States than in other countries. Mane Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game. It is very popular with high schools, and in more than twenty states, state-wide high school tournaments are held every year.
Other spectator sports include wrestling, boxing, and horse racing.
There are many participant sports in America. Golf is probably the most popular. While the game originated in Scotland, it is possibly more popular in the United States than anywhere else. It is played whenever weather permits.
Swimming, water skiing and hockey are in fashion. In recent years there has been a great increase in the popularity of indoor bowling.
But much as Americans like to engage in sports or to watch games being played, they seem to get just as much enjoyment out of reading and talking about sports. Usually, several pages of the daily paper are devoted to sports events, and games are televised and described on the radio.
